'THE BOYS IN THE FRONT ROOM' is a new musical based on the lives of the British Playwright Joe Orton and his partner and Murderer Kenneth Halliwell. The story follows their relationship from the day they met until the day they died 16 years and two months later, showing how the slow switch of dynamic in their creative lives was to affect them so dramatically. The bond that had held them together for such a long time was their overwhelming desire for success and celebrity. As Joe's writing fame grew though, and eclipsed Kenneth's part in that process to such an extraordinary degree, their fates were sealed.
With their relationship barely surviving until the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, which made gay sexual activity legal, 'THE BOYS IN THE FRONT ROOM' portrays life in a world of both lies and despair as well as bravado and humour. While both of them could be prickly and abrasive characters,
the work they produced has been variously described as 'a comedy classic of English literature', 'the most quick-witted, pungent and sprightly entertainment... for a decade' and as
having 'flashes of wit... that can match Oscar Wilde'.
'THE BOYS IN THE FRONT ROOM' is the first collaborative work of
Richard Silver and Sean J Hume.
